Homestay in Italy

While I was traveling through Europe with the traveling program called People to People, I had the chance to have a homestay with an Italian family. My family consisted of their daughter, a girl named Ilda who was 16 (and was the most beautiful Italian girl I had ever seen, so fashionable and with the longest, curliest hair I had ever seen), her brother Denis who was around the age of 12 as well as their parents. I later learned that their parents were originally from Malta but moved to Italy. The dad worked late nights driving cars, so we hardly saw him; thus, we saw the mom more.

The days that I spent with Ilda and Denis I enjoyed it! I first arrived at their house, where the lived, which was an apartment. Ilda and Denis shared a bedroom, there was a little kitchen that they had, and there was also a family room, where the other girl (from People to People, Kerstyn from Chicago) and I spend the nights.

Some of my favorite memories from spending time with Ilda and her family were the first night that Kerstyn and I arrived at Ilda's house. Her mom got some bottled ice tea for Ilda, Denis, Kerstyn and I and we all sat down in Ilda and Denis' bedroom. It was a very casual time. Later that evening we walked to this long bridge. We walked over the bridge, both ways, and then headed back to their house. That night and at the time that we stayed with Ilda and her family we slept on the couches that they had in their family room.

First night with the best Italian host family

Another memory that I have, of my homestay with Ilda and her family, is when her mom mad this amazing pizza. It was homecooked and tasted amazing! Later that night we had a cake to celebrate Denis' birthday! I was happy to be apart of the celebration! Besides the birthday celebration, I have memories of Ilda, Kerstyn and I getting all dressed up and going into town one day. We all decided to do a hairstyle that incorporated a bow with our hair. We all also did our makeup so we kinda all got all dolled up! In addition, we decided to take the bus one day, with the ticket down below as proof!

Getting Dressed up & Exploring Italy

Another night in Italy

Another one of my favorite memory was when we went to this "beach" but when I say "beach" it was basically just a bunch of rocks. Some rocks were large, like sitting rocks that you could sit/ lay on. Actually, while we visited this beach, we saw some other people on our People to People trip with us. Ilda, Kerstyn, and I layed on the large rocks, and later that day got some gelato. I remember going back to Ilda's house, and being so sunburnt on my back eek!

It was amazing staying with a different family, especially in a different country! I had always wanted to host an international student in the United States, but I felt so lucky being able to be hosted in Italy! ❤️ I remember giving Ilda and her family the little towel that I had gotten from the little store in Cleveland called Mulholland & Sachs, and I left a thank you card on the couch that I had slept on. We exchanged addresses, in order to stay in touch; however, leaving Ilda and her family was so hard! Ilda was crying, tears rolling down her cheek. Kerstyn and I hopped into Ilda and Denis' dad's car, as well as Ilda, for he was going to drive us back to our People to People meeting spot. Leaving was so hard; however, I had a feeling that I would see Ilda and her family again!
