Delicious Foods of Hiroshima & Hatsukaichi

Checking into the hotel in Hiroshima we met our roommates and had some time to relax before going to dinner. We then walked five minutes to dinner and arrived at this local place where you would go in these tent sort of set up tables with plastic protecting them from the cold. They would be our way of going in and out. However, at dinner it was sort of like hibachi style grill. They served things on a grill and prepared things for us there on the grill. We first had some fried fish then we grilled duck I believe but the group was not a fan of it even though I ate all of it to be polite. Then next came the big pasta pancake with cabbage and egg and inside (as shown below). The top was my favorite part. Then last was desert which was a vanilla ice cream and half of Hiroshima’s well known cookie. I still do not know the name but I know it had red bean paste inside. Dinner was delicious, and then we headed back to the hotel, for another day of exploring for unique foods tomorrow.

***Day 2 in the field program***

As the ferry we were on pulled into Hatsukaichi, we hopped off and explored the city. It was large, and beautiful, and we definitely were not given enough time for just one day. Yet, as I got off the ferry, I found a group who was wandering to try and find lunch, since it was that time. I decided to wander with them. Trying to find lunch as many of the different restaurants and vendors we came across Hiroshima’s well known cookies. I got my cookie with sweet potato and it was delicious. Soon I ran into the trip liaison, Angel and Paige and we started to wander to find lunch. We wandered around to find lunch and ended up getting lunch at a local spot in the area. Paige and I ended up getting chicken and egg with rice and it was delicious. I was indecisive at first about getting it and thinking if it would be good but it was surprisingly good. When the three of us were done with lunch we all decided to get ice cream. Angel got her ice cream in a cup with a little sweet potato at one of the local spots while Paige and I decided to continue walking to find a shop that interested us more. Paige finally found a spot that interested her, and at first I thought that Angel's ice cream looked cooler; yet, once I read that the ice cream at the place where Paige was going to get hers made their ice cream cones was a special type I changed my mind. Paige ended up getting chocolate chip, while I got green tea mix with the special cone.

As we got headed out of Hatsukaichi, and took a bullet train back to Kobe, we were allowed to walk around the train station. I got some delicious snacks, and stopped in the food area of the train station, trying all the free samples of food, trying to satisfy my hunger on free food samples. I ended up going to a 7/11 getting a milk tea and a animal cookie ( a cookie with an animal face) and some Hiroshima Kit Kat's. Wondering what they tasted like, I was determined not to open them, and collect Kit Kat's along my journey across 11 countries, and then bring them home to my family so we could all try them together!

We got on the train and from there I tried the milk tea and animal cookie. Stay tuned for more food stories!
