While I only spend a day in Hawaii, I was immersed in the culture, and especially the food. My first stop was at a local restaurant, Moku Kitchen Restaurant. My Culinary Tourism class was given a backstage access tour. We saw how they cooked the pizza, which would soon become our lunch.
Later on, we sat down, and were told that we would be getting shave ice from a local place nearby. My class got excited as table by table we were dismissed to go to the shave ice hut. It is was small, but it made it memorable. The shave ice place was called, Kahala Shave Ice. They made their flavors 100% organically, from locally grown fruits. And the day that we went the flavors that I got on my shave ice were Lychee (thought to be natures candy), and Vanilla (for who ever said vanilla was blue?)
The food journey continued, as we hoped back in the bus, and drove to Paradise Cove Luau. We were given a tour of the site, and saw where the pig that they get when they have luaus lies. Our guide, Ernest, went into detail, telling us that the pig is burried in many layers, one of the layers consisting of grape leaves. My class walked around, seeing the grounds while the pig was being cooked; yet, when it was time, we all rushed over to see the pig being raised from the grounds, to be prepared for our dinner.
My time in Hawaii was very enjoyable, from the pig, to the shave ice. I hope one day I can return to Hawaii and explore more of the local traditions, and restaurants!
What great pictures. Makes me hungry. Keep them coming!!
